Making clean energy sausage on Beacon Hill-The Climate Minute Podcast
Tuesday Nov 24, 2015
Tuesday Nov 24, 2015
There is an old saying that goes “You don’t want to watch either sausages or laws get made.” However, sometimes an unpleasant sight can spur a response. The Massachusetts Legislature is locked in a stalled process to raise the solar energy ‘net-metering’ cap, with the House and Senate discussing a bill that is either really bad (House version) or acceptably bad (Senate version.) You can let your representative know we need to support solar fully by checking the ‘Where do I vote?” link. The MA Attorney General commissioned a study the shows we do NOT need new pipelines, which is a boon to activists. Finally, DR notes a concrete example of the harm that might come from the ISDS clause of the TPP.

Keystone is more than a victory: The Climate Minute Podcast
Friday Nov 13, 2015
Friday Nov 13, 2015
The President recently denied permission to build the Keystone XL pipeline and it is clear that the pipeline opposition movement was crucial to the Mr Obama’s decision. This has been a big, transformative moment for climate activists, and a little self evaluation is worthwhile? What have we Climate Hawks learned about ourselves from all the effort over the last few year? We discuss a few possible answers.

TPP in the sunlight, Exxon in the dock: The Climate Minute Podcast
Monday Nov 09, 2015
Monday Nov 09, 2015
The Trans-Pacific Partnership is mostly an agreement among corporations, not among real people or even nations. The text was finally opened for public scrutiny last week. Let’s just say there is a lot of discussion that needs to happen! On top of that, Exxon-and the fossil fuel industry in general- is suddenly at legal risk over their efforts to obstruct climate progress. We discuss.

WHO doesn't like meat? The Climate Minute Podcast
Monday Nov 02, 2015
Monday Nov 02, 2015
Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) said that various meats are bad for your health. Did you know they are also bad for the planet? The carbon footprint of meat is very large. According to the Guardian, “The global livestock industry produces more greenhouse gas emissions than all cars, planes, trains and ships combined..” So eating less meat is good for you and the planet. There a lot of other meaty stuff going on for Climate Hawks, so we make a lightening review of TPP, CPP, COP21, Solar caps and Pilgrim. If that alphabet soup makes no sense to you, listen in and we’ll catch you up!

Back to the Future, 2045: The Climate Minute Podcast
Friday Oct 23, 2015
Friday Oct 23, 2015
“Back to the Future Day” just happened and gives Climate Hawks a chance to go to the year 2045 and see what it might look like. Just remember: what we do now will influence what happens in thirty years, just as we wish that back in 1989 someone had taken bold action then. It is our turn to be that someone.

A Legacy Moment: The Climate Minute Podcast
Friday Oct 16, 2015
Friday Oct 16, 2015
In Massachusetts, the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station will shutter in 2019, depriving the state of a big chuck on carbon-free energy. What should be done to fill the gap? Build more pipelines for carbon polluting natural gas? Import out-of-state power from Hydro-Quebec? Or build a green energy infrastructure right at home? This is a moment where great things can be done, if our leaders hear the call. We discuss.

Just Four Cape Winds: The Climate Minute Podcast
Friday Oct 02, 2015
Friday Oct 02, 2015
The real possibility of a shutdown of the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station creates a crisis (or perhaps an opportunity.) It means that Climate Hawks should demand clean energy to fill the gap. It would take only four projects comparable to Cape Wind to fill that gap. There are bills in the Massachusetts Statehouse that relate to clean energy, and they are the being debated. Further, now that KXL is in deep trouble, and Shell has withdrawn from the Chukchi Sea, what is next for Climate Hawks? Our next big push should be for a ban on the extraction of carbon based fuels from federally owned lands, whether they are in the American West or off our coastal shores.
The reading list:
• Pilgrim Nuclear Station on the ropes
• An energy showdown in the Statehouse?
• Is this about electricity prices or true leadership?
• Is offshore wind a possibility?
• Climate Hawk focus: Fossil fuel on Federal lands
