Dissent…and cocoa: The Climate Minute Podcast
Friday Jan 13, 2017
Friday Jan 13, 2017
The Constitution calls for us to inaugurate our new president, but it also specifically protects “the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” On January 21 we will march in Boston Common to oppose the many repugnant policies of the new administration. Link to the January 21 march through the MCAN event page and say your will be marching with MCAN. Then send an email to carololdham@massclimateaction.net and come by MCAN HQ for a cup of hot chocolate! Plus, Maura Healy wins a round with Exxon, and we wonder what our new “friend” Rex Tillerson is up to. Listen in!

As the implications of the Trumpian climate desecration plan become ever more clear, the need to resist his agenda is obvious. From a request for names of climate scientists at DOE to legitimate fears that climate data will be deleted from government computers, we need no new signs of a malevolent intent. “Hamilton Electors” are great to support, but read up on a practical guide to resisting the Turmp agenda . Listen in as we discuss.

The planet passed a woeful milestone this month. The annual minimum of CO2 in the air occurs in September at the end of the Northern Hemisphere’s summer-is greater than 400ppm. Given the long lifetime of CO2 in the atmosphere, it is unlikely that you or I, or anyone living, will see a planet with less than 400ppm in the remainder of our lives. At the same time, Bill McKibben notes that humans have already built enough mines and drilled enough wells to pollute the air beyond safe limits. That said, there is NO need to explore for new fossil fuel deposits, or even to exploit the ones the industry knows about. New wells are a waste of money, since we cannot use the oil. (Tell that to your investment advisor!) Listen in as we discuss.
Because we recognize the necessity of personal accountability for our actions, because we accept responsibility for building a durable future and because we believe it is our patriotic duty as citizens to speak out, we must insist that the United States put a price on carbon.

MA Senate rolls out a shiny new Omnibus: The Climate Minute Podcast
Friday Jul 01, 2016
Friday Jul 01, 2016
The Massachusetts Senate passed an Omnibus Energy bill that mandates 2GW of wind power, increases the use of renewables by 2% a year and bans the ‘pipeline tax.’ This is good news! Next comes joint work between the House and Senate to reconcile the two different versions of the bill passed by each body. Climate Hawks should urge their legislators to put the Senate’s vision into the final bill.

Omnibus or Minibus? The Climate Minute Podcast
Monday May 30, 2016
Monday May 30, 2016
The Massachusetts State House of Representatives released a draft Omnibus Energy Bill that would call for 1.2 GW of offshore wind, and about half the Quebec-Hydro the Governor has requested. The bill also dodges the question of the ‘pipeline tax’- neither supporting or rejecting it. Plus, UMASS divests and Exxon continues denial as usual. What a week!

No shield for fraud: The Climate Minute Podcast
Tuesday May 17, 2016
Tuesday May 17, 2016
This has been a busy week for under-the-radar news. Exxon is feeling the legal heat from Climate Hawks and is trying to strike back. We discuss the plans. In Ft McMurray Canada, the heat is on due to wildfires traceable to climate change. In Paris last December, the agreement essentially targeted a 1.5C temperature rise limit which has big implications that only now are becoming apparent. Finally, the Massachusetts Omnibus Energy bill is being written now- it is a good time to call your representative. Here is what to ask for:
• Two thousand megawatts of offshore wind
• Increase Renewable Portfolio Standard to 2% year
• Environmental standards for massive electricity transmission project and
• PLEASE ask them to vote against the bill altogether if it includes a pipeline tax!

What color is your water? The Climate Minute Podcast
Tuesday Jan 26, 2016
Tuesday Jan 26, 2016
Water seems to be coursing through this week’s climate news. The Governor gave his State of the State address, and made a strong call to use Canadian Hydropower to reduce our GHG emissions. The spread of the Zika virus may depend on standing water in Brazil, and of course, there is the sad crisis of poisoned wafer in Flint Michigan. What does that tell us about climate? Listen in.
